I'd hope most of that could be avoided, but economies have cycles. I've lived through several, although not a major depression yet. Trying to avoid them just makes things worse and causes the unwinding and pain to last longer.

To me, that's not a logical statement. Its possible to avoid something without making it worse. Maybe I am wrong but it sounds like you and John are saying that if something has been good or if someone screws up, then what follows has to be bad. That sounds to me like Judeo-Christian ethos as opposed to economic reality.
