Because it makes it harder to cheat. Indiana newspaper: “Voter cited by opponents of Indiana’s ID law registered in two states.” The big case before the U.S. Supreme Court is whether voters have to show a photo ID to vote — just like they do if they want to buy a beer or a pack of smokes: Regardless of how old they are. Opponents claim, oh, it doesn’t stop vote fraud and it hurts the poor and minorities and makes hair grow on the palms of your hands. Or something like that. The Indiana League of Women Voters and the Democratic Party trotted out 2 plaintiffs to sue the state and challenge the law in court. The Supremes agreed to hear it.One of the plaintiffs is Faye Buis-Ewing, 72, who curiously enough claims a homestead exemption in both Florida and Indiana and who tried to use her Florida driver’s license as an ID to vote in Indiana. She is registered to vote in both states. “This shows that the Indiana ID law worked here, which also calls into question why the critics are so vehemently against this law, especially with persons like this, who may not have a legal right to vote in this election,” Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita told Cindy Bevington of the Evening Star newspaper in Auburn, Ind. Curiously, Maureen Groppe of the Indianapolis Star didn’t mention the plaintiff is registered to vote in 2 states, instead reporting: “Buis-Ewing, who spends part of the year in Florida, did not have an Indiana driver’s license, and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles said she could not use her Social Security card to get an Indiana identity card.” No mention was made of the Florida driver’s license either. If a woman who cheats like this — claiming permanent residence in 2 states to avoid paying property taxes (a woman I might add who can afford a summer home and a winter home) is the best the Democratic Party and its League of Women Voters subsidiary can show, then justices ought to uphold the law 9-0. And protect my vote from being diluted by double-dipping tax cheats. The only day in court she should get is in a criminal court to explain why she is registered to vote in 2 states.
