If I had the time and the desire, I could write a book on education. I taught mathematics and left the system when I realized I couldn't teach as I would like. I had to abide by the regulations of the NCTM, the NEA, the local school boards, the state school boards, the State Legislatures, the Government at the National level etc. and use the books that the publishers designed. Yes, in graduate school I even participated in committees considering the future of mathematics-----I knew then that we were headed in the wrong direction in the teaching of mathematics and science but the 'change' movement in the system of teaching and learning mathematics and science had begun years before our committees came to be. Governor Charles Robb was an early Governor in Virginia to tackle standards for learning at the state level. There was much debate over what they should be. From there the National Requirements expanded to encompass the whole United States. Home Schooling and private schools proliferated----for good reason. One comment on the Say No to Drug Movement-----it was a necessary movement. If it had not happened we would have more Americans with their brains fried on illegal drugs. I have friends whose adult children i.e. 20's to early 40's are walking zombies because of illegal drugs----episodes in emergency rooms, car accidents, some not living due to suicides. These adult children are withdrawn from the drugs much like the Hollywood Stars. Gradually they are transferred to antidepressants that then affect their creative urges and change who they are further. Few will ever reach their full potential or even partial potential because of the illegal drugs. If you don't like what the Federal Government is attempting to do in Education, please don't hold your breath while more mandates and tinkering is done with the Health Care and Social Security System or you may suffocate from lack of air. Bush takes the blame now--------remember we had 8 years of the Clintons and 4 years of GB Senior before GWB. mj
