The link you provided to Gray Whales brought back to me the memory of the surprise my father gave me on my 11th birthday when he took me out on a boat to see the Gray whales. They migrate quite close to the California coast this time of year.

All the reasons why whales an porpoises beach themselves are not understood. I saw a nature film recently about a beach in south Chile where the beach cobbles are just the right size for dolphins to scape the parsites off their skins. They would enter the shallows and roll around on the stones to give their skins a good scraping. If you're a cetacean with an itch, how do you scratch it?

There is a lot about animal behavior we don't understand.
