Actually I can envision a hybrid form of universal health care for the US.

It would be based on a goal of providing catastrophic coverage for all US citizens. Individuals would be enrolled at birth under a mandate.

Catastrophic coverage is cheap, esp. if children are in the insurance pool, from an actuarial standpoint. The govt. would be the payer, thus reducing costs associated with sales, marketing and profits.

Just off the top of my head, I picture catastrophic as meaning one time catastrophic illnesses (ex. cancer), accidents (ex. car wrecks), and chronic diseases that aren't particularly life threatening (ex. diabetes).

The devil, of course, is always in the details.

Everything else falls into either self-pay or private health insurance.
