What is needed is intelligent grid technology combined with home automation based on the X-10 protocol. The utility continuously sends price information for the next time interval (15 min?) and the customer programs his controller for what loads (if any) he wishes to shed for any given price. Demand management based on real time pricing seems to be the ultimate market based solution. Much better than simply adding generating capacity to service peak loads.
