Freedom, you'd have to adjust for age, race, poverty, etc. That said, the US health system is good at dealing with acute problems, using intensive treatment. Why? That is where the incentives are for treatment, where the docs make their money. For too many reasons, our system does not do a good job with chronic conditions.

Again, Howard Bolnick is the best on this topic.
