Equality in economic terms isn't a huge concern for me. Not that I object to people being more equal in terms of wealth or income, I wouldn't have a problem with that result, but its not something that I'm going to reduce efficacy or freedom for. Most steps to increase equality reduce one or the other or both.

As for protecting from poverty. Trying to make sure that no one is poor winds up making more people poorer than it makes wealthier.

"Social safety nets" can mean all sorts of things, not all of them automatically good, you have to argue for the specific one. The same thing goes for "programs that support families in trouble".
