Very true, but the candidates that promised energy independence never had both houses of Congress behind them. This time around, it is probably that the Democrats will have Congress and the White House, which means they'll be able to pass all sorts of laws and appropriations towards energy independence. The Dems won't need cooperation from Republicans, because after 7 years of shitty governance, the Republicans won't have power any more.

After the way democrats treated President Bush when he arrived with an commitment to change the tone in Washington, don't look for any cooperation from Republicans. Perhaps they would lay low to deliver a couple sucker punches like democrats did to President Bush.
