There are at least four things going on in that study:
* Wine quality is very poorly correlated with price;
* Consumer perception is strongly correlated with price;
* Taste is very individual and changes with time and context; and
* Most people are not very experienced tasters.

Meanwhile, in the spirit of the thread, my vote for the absolute best wine on the planet, Swan Zinfandels, can be obtained for under $20 if one is clever enough to buy futures. The best way to get futures is to come visit Swan during the Barrel Tasting weekend(s), but I'm pretty sure Rod would sell them to you by fax or phone at that same time.

Of course, since taste is very individual, it means that one should have a preference for Zin and, in particular for Zins which are rich, but not over the top, and well balanced ... enough so that they last forever, unlike most Zins. I had the 69-70, Joe's first vintage, a few weeks ago and it was still wonderful ... better, indeed, than most contemporary Zins and unique for its depth and complexity.
