The in addition to the option of buying cheaper used vehicles at the cost of fuel efficiency is the choice most have not exercised recently--don't buy at all for another year or two. The replacement cycle has not really been determined by need for years. Most people can get another few years from the vehicle they already own. We grew up that way. It will continue to be tough sledding for the auto industry with slower sales and the smaller lower margin rides being most in demand.

With all due respect, sometimes you have to look beyond your $$ cost and consider the environmental costs. It's like littering or voting. We all need to do our part when we can.
Incandescents vs CFs is a good example. I never gave a second thought to spending a few dollars on a bulb that will immediately cut my bills and help the environment.
