So far the author has not made any statements to that.

Cortez was in Mexico doing his thing

Ponce de León doing the same in Florida.

Pánfilo de Narváez in Cuba and later Florida and Mexico (as a challenge to Cortez's growing empire).

Cabeza de Vaca wandering around with three others, one a North African slave, from Florida all the way to the Pacific ocean after being shipwrecked by Narváez's mismanagement of one expedition.

And many others as well, all currying favor with the King to procure more funds and Spaniards to occupy new settlements.

In short, there was no shortage of gold stories circulating in the "New" world and Spain, Portugal and beyond. Spain was hard up for capable captains amongst the Spanish that they recruited other nationalities to lead voyages behind the riggings.

All in the name of bring Christianity to the heathens (did gold have anything to do with it?).
