There has always been a religious element. Texas was primarily rural until recently and churches were an important social component.

But, it wasn't considered polite to push your religion until The Boom and the rise of the born agains. Whether or not one caused the other is hard to say, but they certainly happened about the same time.


And that coincided with the rise of Bush. Its hard to shake the feeling that all of this was coordinated by some wizard of oz behind the scenes but I guess that would be believing in conspiracy theories........and we never want to do that.
