Well, of course LTBH doesn't work if you focus on one stock or one sector when that sector has a 10 year slump. When I talk about LTBH, I talk about being diversified. Right now, portions of my portfolio are doing great. Others, not so great. So being diversified is another key to long term buy hold success. That's why I recovered from the tech bust so quickly, I didn't have all my eggs in that basket. I had a sizeable amount in other sectors, like oil, energy, real estate, bonds etc. So it all balanced out. Right now, my bond funds are doing great, for example.

To me LTBH is defined by the following:
* diversification
* periodic re-balancing
* age/time horizon appropriate risk
* steady, periodic savings and investment...dollar-cost averaging

All of those components are necessary if you want to be a successful LTBH investor over the long term.
