NEW DELHI: Dhanteras ushered in the festivities of Diwali on Wednesday. People brought home the symbolic 'dhan' as they purchased items made of metals to mark the arrival of goddess Lakshmi. While the occasion often brings booming business to those selling jewellery and utensils, this year there was a twist in the script.

With gold prices shooting through the roof, only traders dealing in silver jewellery and utensil saw customers lining outside their shops. Unlike previous years, this time people preferred picking up silver coins and utensils to keep the tradition of Dhanteras alive. "Last year, we did not have time to catch breath but today we are sitting relaxed like a normal day. But we have our eyes on the door. Sometimes people start pouring in just before the night falls," said Sanjay Verma of Shiv Shakti Jewellers in Chandni Chowk.

As gold touched Rs 10,600 for 10 gram, it was silver items that made way into homes. Coins and statues of Lakshmi-Ganesh made of the white metal were new favourites. "Our business has come down by at least 15% because of the spiralling prices. We get 30-35 customers every day but on Dhanteras, we expect to have over 125 buyers coming to our showroom. But most of them end up buying silver coins," said Rajeev Bhola from B K Jewellery House in Tilak Nagar.
