S&P Market Commentary ------(S&P) 17-Jan-08 Pg. 2 Seg 1
01/17/08 - 12:18 PM... Stocks plunging as Bernanke say more rate cuts needed to
prop up economy, conditionally backed an economic stimulus package, dodged
politically sensitive questions from House committee. At the same time, reports
showed the Philadelphia Fed plunged, Dec. Housing Starts, Jobless Claims fell
but continuing claims rose. Also, Merrill Lynch posted a big loss. NYSE breadth
24-6 negative. NASDAQ breadth 20-7 negative. Trading moderate. Some volatility
on options expirations. Bonds soaring on prospect of lower rates, dollar
falling. Gold off. Oil futures skidding on demand worries.
