The smearvets were also not real veterans. The leaders were rightwing dirty tricksters and smear operatives who recruited some Republican vets to put up a false front for them. And none of those other vets ever even met Kerry in their lives, so the whole thing was a phony hoax, and a very evil and ugly one. Not a single claim the smearvets made turned out to be even remotely true. All pure libel.
