Public Invited To EPA Meeting

The public is invited to ask questions and share concerns about a proposed coal-to-liquids fuel plant in Columbiana and Jefferson counties.

The focus of the meeting is the potential impact of treated wastewater discharging into the Ohio River. If a wastewater discharge permit is issued to Ohio River Clean Fuels, LLC, for its proposed facility, it would allow the facility to discharge up to 9.7 million gallons of treated wastewater per day into the Ohio River.

Ohio River Clean Fuels seeks to construct a plant to transform coal and other biomass into liquid fuel via a coal glasification process. If constructed, the plant would produce an estimated 52,000 barrels per day of liquid fuel and enough electricity to operate the plant and provide a surplus for export on the adjacent power grid.

The proposed project may result in a change from the current water quality conditions of the Ohio River, but can't violate Ohio's water quality standards.

Ohio EPA will consider the technical, economic, social and environmental aspects of the project before deciding to issue or deny permits.

Again, the public is invited to comment on the proposed facility just west of Wellsville. The meeting will be at 6:30 tonight at Wellsville High School.

Comments on the draft permit can also be submitted in writing to: Ohio EPA Division of Surface Water, Permits Processing Unit P.O. Box 1049 Columbus, OH 43216-1049

The public comment period ends June 3.
