I have observed many different behaviors. But usually, you are right. New producers will swing big with gold only if they regularly announced progress towards full production as indicated by previous studies.

There are case where stocks went ahead of themselves before publication of initial quarters of full production and then collapse on bad news (I think Gammon and Alamos fall in that gorup). There are case where stocks are relatively quiet and seems to be waiting for confirmation of successful commercial production before moving big (cases like EPM, MFL).

Others are moving fast and stay high on the succesful production (Jaguar)...

So your rule appears to be the one to follow, but there seems to be exceptions.
