A zone defense at that age? That's nuts. We used to start zones in the sixth grade but now make kids wait until the seventh. No matter what age, in rec (recreation, as opposed to travel) basketball, not many kids are really capable of penetrating a defense and scoring. You are lucky to get more than one per team if you have fair drafts.

Run a triangle and two (or 2-3) and no third grade team will score more than 10 points a game. Normally the best kid brings the ball down. You put your best defender on him to slow him down and use the other up guy to trap him. No way a kid at this age will get through this. Either it's a turnover (just teach the defenders to put two hands on the ball for a jump ball) or he passes the ball to, by definition, a lesser player.

A zone allows double teaming of everyone. Very very few older kids can dribble through a zone. Young kids can't reach the basket from 10 feet away, let alone shoot over a defender. What are the average scores of your games?
