I am not an expert on REITs, that is for sure. For other companies, I can look at their balance sheets and get a good idea as to what is going on and whether they have value. For the REITS I can understand the risks they are currently facing but can't appreciate all the details.

That said, I do have credit for the first CFA exam from being an actuary, I do have experience in the economic capital management strategy for financial orgs, and I do know a bit about investing. I've just been building up cash for 8 years or so. Given the crap I've gone through to get that money, I'm pretty hesitant about doing anything with a significant amount of that money until the market has corrected a bit more.
