We don't allow any defense until the kids get past either the three point arc (3-5th grade), or half court (6th-8th grade). Pressing used to be allowed for 6th grade on, but only in the last two-three minutes. Now they only allow it if you are down by 10 or more. Therefore, there's little incentive to rush the ball up-court. The reason is because, otherwise, there would be almost no scoring.

I do need to mention that there's a vast difference in talent between the kids where I live and say, the inner city. Our tennis courts and golf courses are filled. About the only place for a pickup basketball game is at the beach. Most of the coaches are hedge fund guys where the entire training comes from sitting ringside at Knicks games (g). So perhaps if we had different talent...
