I'm sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Those things are never easy, and it sounds as though he had his share of suffering softened by the loving family around him.

I love Pachelbel. I have several renditions of his Canon for Strings on my smart phone, and I can listen to it over and over again for hours. Music that lasts for 300 years is more than just music. I heard that he wrote it as a training exercise for his students. Is that true?

Kahlil Gibran seemed to know the human spirit precisely. I've often used his passage on Eating and Drinking to defend the ancient practice of hunting:

When you kill a beast say to him in your heart,
"By the same power that slays you, I too am slain; and I too shall be consumed. For the law that delivered you into my hand shall deliver me into a mightier hand.

Your blood and my blood is naught but the sap that feeds the tree of heaven."
