Hamas Leader Pleads Help For Gaza From Arab Nations

1/20/2008 10:06:42 PM A day after Gaza City plunged into darkness following Israel's decision to block fuel shipments into the territory, the Hamas leadership pleaded with Arab leaders and the rival Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, on Sunday, asking them to forget their differences and help the beleaguered Gazans.

In a rare show of emotion, hard-line Khaled Mashaal, who lives in exile in Damascus, Syria, told Al-Jazeera satellite TV in a live interview that all Arab leaders should exercise "real pressure to stop this Zionist crime ... take up your role and responsibility."

"We are not asking you to wage a military war against Israel ... but just stand with us in pride and honor."

Mashaal said he had been in touch Sunday with some Arab countries including Egypt and Saudi Arabia to see if they could pressure Israel to allow badly needed fuel shipments. The Hamas leader also pleaded with Egypt to consider providing fuel to the Gaza plant. However, Egyptian officials were non-committal on the issue.
