Even after the '29 crash the market eventually paid back investors- depending upon which average you look at- of course it took 25 years. If you bought July 1st 1929, at the peak, you would get back your money April 1st 1954 (I've done no inflation adjustment). And you'd really get your money back sooner because of dividends.
