If you want to see why it is a fact, go to shadowstats.com John Williams computes CPI as it would be if we followed the methodology in 1992. The CPI would turn out to be 7.5% or so in that case.

What happened in between 1992 and now is a series of tricks like hedonic pricing, substitution, geometric weighting and so on. That is why the government "inflation" numbers or 2% or so seem so unreal to the vast majority of people who have to eat, drive cars, heat their homes, school their children and take care of health expenses.
