The public isn't interested in financial reality. The public wants to believe whatever fictions support their current investments. If they're invested in houses, they will dismiss any news (no matter how factual) that goes against the decision they've made to hold those investments. It's a common type of investing myopia: Once an investor places his (or her) faith in a stock, an option or a house, they will selectively filter out all information that runs counter to their currently-held position.
