On financial terms, Black Monday, the Asian currency crisis, even 9/11, where often inflated when people talked about them. The same thing for the "Y2K crisis" and many other things. Not that they where not expensive and damaging, but they never threatened to derail our economy.

The stagflation of the 70s, was a bit closer, but even here much of what needed to be done was to change to doing less. Stop trying to respond to every down turn with a large stimulus, stop trying things like wage and price controls, deregulate highly regulated industries and allow more competition, etc.
