clear lines between the various man made names of the atmosphere, these lines are imaginary. There are clear (but moving) lines. There are different forces acting upon the atmosphere at higher levels than near the surface. The air at different elevations has to move in different directions to accommodate these forces. This change in movements is not a gradual shifting of the wind, but instead a very abrupt break in speed and direction known as the tropopause or "jet stream". The air currents tend to roll-over at these points and not cross into the other layer. TP
