Reagan and Gingrich made the Republicans the party of dominant ideas for nearly a generation. That's how political success is measured.

Debating what was good policy or not is a different issue that Hillary is conflating with Obama's original point to slam him.

But if she is right, maybe she will win in SC. We will know in a few days.

"party of ideas" and "challenging conventional wisdom" sounds pretty much like words to be admired.

Does not exactly sound like anything resembling "party of lousy ideas" or "stupid challenges to conventional wisdom".

Trying to twist your way out of that is not a terrific quality.<<

Mary -

Reagan did challenge conventional wisdom, and he certainly had plenty of ideas. The thing he did was to get moderate voters who had previously voted Democratic to vote for Republicans. And he got them to buy his ideas, even though they were terrible.

That's what Obama was talking about, and he has nothing to apologize for, nor anything to twist his way out of.

Personally, I can't see why saying something complimentary about a former President of the opposite party is such a horrible crime.
