A better one would be a variable one. Look up the number of people in the age groups entering the workforce, and the normal labor participation in those groups, and figure out how many actual new people are being added to the workforce. Or if you want a simple and quick way of looking at things, than look at the unemployment rate. Its not the ideal measure either, but its better than just assuming that we have to add precisely 150,000 jobs a month when the amount needed may be under 100K or over 200K.
