But was Reagan among the 5 to 10 great presidents? Certainly not if you measure them in terms of successfully improving the lives of Americans. But certainly so if you measure them in terms of their ability to change the political culture.

Well I wasn't really even paying much attention to Presidential politics or the US economy when he was in office, so I don't have a strong view on his affect on the American people. But the discussion revolved around whether it's smart to cite the strengths/successes of a President from the opposing party - and with Obama's theme of unification, and the President's role as the leader of all of us, the answer obviously seems to be "of course", especially one with the popularity numbers of Reagan. Once you make it to President your role transcends your political party - you're leading all Americans.
