I gather you disagree with Stiglitz' point that this economic downturn looks to be a long term as well as a short term problem. And the stimulus package needs to reflect both needs.

It doesnt matter if I agree or disagree.

The point of a stimulus package would be to either alleviate or avoid some of the pain of a recession. Everything I have read points to the fact that any stimulus package needs to be implemented either before or just into the recession (it may already be too late). It wont do much good if we are already 9 months into the downturn. If you are going to have a stimulus package the money needs to be spent in the next few months....which means passage of the bill in February.

The structural problems are a different matter entirely. It makes way more sense to spend the time to make sure you get such issues as education spending and energy research right than to throw money at the problem in a quickly formed bill.

The two matters have entirely different timelines. If he wanted to argue that for a small stimulus package followed by a structural package, his argument would be fine. Unfortunately, he mixes the issues....
