But the huge problem with Reagan/Bush was that after the recession ended in 1982, the spending and debt explosion went on and on and on and on.

My memory is that the tax cutting in the early 80s, without concurrent spending constraints, was not done for economic reasons. But rather for ideological reasons. You may recall the David Stockman quote that the point of that was to create a fiscal crisis in government funding which would lead to a reduction in the size of government.

KyrosL;

But the huge problem with Reagan/Bush was that after the recession ended in 1982, the spending and debt explosion went on and on and on and on.

Well of course. I have said that a hundred times here, but to suggest that the economy did not return to a normal sense of balance after Reagan first took office and that it wasn't a mess when he first stepped into office is ridiculous. .........That was my original argument........... To suggest the recovery took place under Carter and/or was a result of Carter's policies is to rewrite history. There is plenty to blame Reagan for and I will help you heap that blame if you want - but Reagan was NOT responsible for the mess he inherited.

You and John also seem to think that republicans have a monopoly on spending. The huge bloated federal government we have belongs to both democrats and republicans. Democrats have been very good at growing government at the federal level. If democrats want to grow the government, then I think they owe it to Americans to at a least tell us how it will be paid for. To balloon government though and hand it over to republicans and tell the republicans to pay for it is to expect economic woes.

First I got in trouble for thinking - for shame - that people on food stamps should not eat better than those paying for the stamps and now this. Jeepers. I feel I have left the "The View From The Center" and have ended up in some far left extremist group. Over the past 28 years, 20 of those years have been under a republican President. I think the real center is way to the right of where the arguments are being made here.
