>>the socialists in Congress are basically proposing to kill all new mine development in the country<<

The proposed bill only affects federal land. Wouldn't affect Northern Dynasty's Pebble Mine (which is on Alaska state land), or NovaGold's Donlin Creek Mine (which is on Alaska native corporation land).

When Alaska's land was divided up, the state and native corps grabbed the best resource development land. The feds focused more on important wildlife habitat.

China becomes Chile's biggest export destination in 2007 replacing the United States
Jan. 24, 2008 (China Knowledge) - China is Chile's biggest export destination in 2007, replacing the United States, according to statistics released on Tuesday by Chile's customs authorities.

Statistics indicate that Chile's export volume recorded a 14.7% rise in 2007, totaling US$65.484 billion, while exports to China reach US$10.172 billion, accounting for 15.5% of the total and making China its largest export destination.

The figures also show that China became Chile's second largest import source country, trailing behind the United States after surpassing Argentina and Brazil.

Chilean entrepreneurs attribute the rapid growth of Chile-China trade to the 2005 free trade agreement (FTA) on commodity trade with China that became effective in 2006.

Cristian Garcia Lorca, chair of the Chile-China Trade Association, said there was still potential for a further increase despite the rapid growth, and that Chilean businesses should make collective efforts to diversify the Chilean exports to China.

China and Chile are undergoing new FTA talks covering service trade and investment that are expected to finish by end 2008.
