There seems to be active civil war brewing within both parties. The Democrats have never been united, which is why they lose elections even though there are more Democrats than Republicans. The Republicans used to have two factions, the Goldwater wing and the Rockefeller wing. After the convention, at which a member of the other wing was usually selected to run for VP, they would unite and work for the ticket. Now, there are many more segments that demand "my way or the highway." When they don't get their candidate nominated, they stay away in droves.
