Locks and keys are a problem that the attacker never has. I don't know the answer to that, as you don't want the gun as a temptation for the kids. For children under 10 or so, a Hechler and Koch P7 is the answer to the lock and key problem. You have to squeeze the cocking grip to get it to fire. It's not difficult for a grownup, but impossible for smaller, weaker hands. For Colombine age kids, that's not a deterrent.
