Media, drugs, health care, defense -- all the usual safety play suspects will attract capital going into a recession/depression, since as you say, their fate is not well-tied to the business cycle -- they are free to be first class scumbugs during all phases, both good and bad Not sure how to effectively invest in religion using the public markets however -- maybe bible printing -- it probably makes more sense to start your own religion for the tax breaks if you can stomach that kind of stuff, but I know I can't
