I think those accolades are a tremendous carrot. Most people would not "sell" their lives for money (if they really thought about it), but when a society springs words like "duty" and "honor" on them, and promises their "sacrifices will be remembered", people sometimes step up to die. It works. I won't say it's dishonest- the people selling it believe it as much as the people buying it, but you can't help but see the parasitic nature of the relationship- between the folks sending people out to die, and the ones doing the dying. Obviously it's an old old carrot. The Spartans had it refined in their day, so it was a hoary chestnut even then.
