Coal gasification prior to combustion I believe can remove mercury and lots of other pollutants. If gasification is done with O2 then CO2 capture is at least "technically" feasible. The cost would be horrific in energy and capital - but it could be done. IMO there are far more crying needs of humanity in the US and abroad than money for this technology.

BTW - it is a cold winter here.
