Oh yes - that meme-like aspect is relied upon by systems that use it. Churches and social organizations have relied upon reverence of bravery to perpetuate their own existence. I guess I recognize the words as being in the human experience much like the words "Santa" and "tooth faeries" are. They are not objectively real quantities that can be weighed or measured, but the effect they have in creating a group identity and social rank can be. How big an organization could "Council of Cowardice" maintain? About a million times less than "Brotherhood of Bravery". Being steadfast in the face of unimaginable opposition may be good under some circumstances. But so can running away.
