"so do the recruitments for most male civilian jobs. "

:-) I immediately flashed on engineers and accountants, and while I love an engineer dearly, I don't see much heroic "recruitment" for them...

I hope you don't think I "blame" the people who desire "face". I just don't see life that way. I may think it's sad- just as I see it sad that a homosexual man might choose to be violently anti-gay to cloak his tendencies from others- but on the underlying tendency, which I believe to be rooted in our wiring, and thus be below conscious control, I cannot fix "blame". I cannot even blame society. So while society may set up the rules for "face", they are old old rules, and they seem to exist in our bones- and we seem uncomfortable looking at them objectively, or even trying to look at them objectively. We are, after all, the product of our social evolution. The only way we can change is if enough of us want to really look at the reasons we do things- which will mean we will have to be able to look at words like bravery, and cowardice, and "good" and "evil", without resorting to the shorthand of "I know it when I see it"- which gets you no further than in to the personal relativistic schema of whatever person thinks they "know what they see". To travel further then that, to try to see beneath the layer of action, to the substrate of motivation, no matter where it leads- that (imo) will be evolution. I think our species is due for a big leap in social evolution. If we don't make one, we'll probably kill each other.
