Not sure if it is as much a disconnect as a revealing of the reality of the true pricing relationship between crude and petroleum.

Since the bulk of the fuel consumed in North America is provided by vertically integrated oil producers, the truth of the economic relationship between crude and fuel was probably better indicated by their reported gross profits than their public denials.

In this environment their response to limits of pricing elasticity may merely be a nod to the reality of the situation.

Bet they still have huge profits come reporting time.
