According to people with knowledge of the discussions, Mr. Lampert has put out feelers to several top retail executives, including Millard S. Drexler, the former Gap chief executive, and Allen I. Questrom, the man behind the J. C. Penney turnaround. But neither has agreed to join the company.

Mickie Drexler was pushed out of GAP in 2001 I think. Since then Gap has gone nowhere but down, they hired a retail guy from Disney Paul Pressler and fired him last year- he had no ideas at all. The Old Navy brand which was Gap's biggest hit these past few years came from Drexler.

Drexler then went to J Crew and has done a masterful job including a successful IPO. but J Crew seems like it is limited in clothing only.

If drexler goes to sears I will buy it. I think he is a retail genius. We've seen this time and time again with executives like Steve Jobs, those that know how to build companies can do it again and those that have never done it- can't- even if they inherit a thriving business like gap or apple.
