The only real reason to do that from a website perspective would be to break a long post into multiple pages in order to generate more page views.

Sometimes posts are overly long - perhaps a complete SEC filing or a full webpage or such. I notice in Gmail, if someone sends me a very long email, after a certain amount of lines they say "Message Clipped: Click here to see complete message"
