TJ, since I agree with that post, I don't know what my misunderstanding is supposed to be. The financial system and other human interactions are "Calvin Ball" [as you say in a longer-winded way].

When you buy gold from somebody who is wanting to sell, you are saving them from having to accept the next lower bid. You thereby reduce the volatility of markets. Although your plan is simple and selfish, as with other transactions people make, both parties benefit with a net gain in value to the community. Value is created out of thin air by both parties although nothing more exists after the transaction than before.

You are a hero, creating great value by conducting your transactions in the face of great danger. Of course, as you say, you don't have a choice but to do the transactions because there are no hills to head for, there is no place to hide, not doing transactions is still a choice. The danger exists whether you act or not.so it's cheap heroism, but heroism anyway because unlike many people you recognize the dangers.

Uncle Al KBE didn't need courage because it was OPM he goofed around with, whereas you are putting your own money on the line. Maybe an OBE would be suitable for you.
