I recall from my childhood people putting wet sheets out in the winter. They'd freeze solid and I guess the water just sublimated away.

About 6" of the white stuff on the ground here today. It snowed pretty much all day yesterday.

What if we didn't have dryers, would they still be so strict? If you hang sheets out side, you don't have to iron them. They hang out wrinkle free and crisp. Just the way I like them.
