It was never perfect... it's always been partisan. But most of my life it's been much, much less partisan than the last 10-15 years. We are over-the-top now.

You're a young guy. (D)'s and (R)'s used to more often than not vote independently, based on the desires of their constituents. They used to hang out together, party together. The entire political scene was much more civil. A pol's private life was off limits while he was alive, unless he somehow outed himself through stupidity.

Define "there". Best example I can think of is when the Republicans banded together and told Nixon he had to go.

I can't imagine that happening now.
