odb,
I suspect that most acts of good works and charity are selfish acts To a point they are all selfish acts.. some purposely, some unwittingly... There are the type you mention and those that are more in the line of Auda abu Tayi ~ Anthony Quin in Lawrence of Arabia.. (another of my all time favourites BTW)...
as in :
T.E. Lawrence: My friends, we have been foolish. Auda will not come to Aqaba. Not for money...
Auda abu Tayi: No.
T.E. Lawrence: ...for Feisal...
Auda abu Tayi: No!
T.E. Lawrence: ...nor to drive away the Turks. He will come... because it is his pleasure.

I'm sure Mother Theresa's DNA programmed her to get pleasure from the way she lived her life... especially since it has been revealed that she lived with a constant crisis of faith..

Myself.. I've posted often that I'm strongly in favour of public ed and health care... not necessarily because it makes me feel good but in the great scheme of things I believe that these thing done properly improve the quality of live for everyone and makes my environment a better place for me in many ways.. I also don't mind ferrying someone else's kid along with mine to hockey or skiing or whatever.. Every kid should get a chance to be all that he/she can be in the same vein as above... Now I realise that Mq thinks that I have a tribal chimpoid outlook ... but IMO that is just too funny at any rate coming a fellow that thinks Ron Paul rocks..

These things are actually pragmatic.. although chit happens.. to a large degree we make our own luck...
