The puritans came to the US to escape Cromwell's theocracy. Europe had also had a long history of tyrannical religions controlling government, mainly from Rome. That resulted in many needless wars and persecution of all kinds of innocent people.

The founding fathers, especially Washington, Jefferson, Franklin and Madison were agnostics who feared monarchy and orthodox religion equally. That's why they built protections against church/state collusion into the Constitution.

Their use of the word "God" does not mean they were favoring one church over any religion or any such thing. In fact they were outspoken about warning us against mixing religion and politics. They are also on record as saying we should be allowed to believe in anything wee want, including no god or a hundred gods. That is America.

Abraham Lincoln shared these views. The founder of the GOP.

And BTW Mitt ROmney totally lied about this last month in his pandering BS speech about his Mormonism. The flipped the facts 180 degrees just to tell evangelicals what they WANT to believe, which is a complete lie. Our founding fathers feared evangelicals as a form of potential tyranny. And if they'd had multi-national corporations and a military-industrial big oil complex then, the founders would have warned us against them too.
